My song “Ruby” was inspired by the novel Before the Wind by Jim Lynch. It’s about a Seattle-based family of sailors and boat builders. The daughter in the family, Ruby, was a natural as a sailor. She had an uncanny relationship to the physical world that made her sailing seem effortless, almost supernatural. Her grandfather said that Ruby “sails with the angels”, thus the genesis of the refrain. It also seemed to me to tie in with her approach to life in general - to take it for what it is and act accordingly . . .
